After touch down I was waiting for the parachutes to deploy, then .... what the heck?! Parachutes are just an option or what?

They didn't start using parachutes til May 1992 during the first Endeavour mission.

Would the wings still be burning from entering the atmostphere...?

Well, at this point in the landing they'd still be hot from the entry..and so sometimes you'll see heat coming from the wings..sometimes you'll see vortex coming off the wings..especially in early morning landings..like if its 7 AM-ish when the air is cooler and this thing glides in.
